Knitting My Way Through Canada

Ottawa_stripes I'm knitting my way through Canada.  Not literally, but I did finish the Ottawa socks and have since started on a pair of Quebec socks (color 4731) in the Regia Canadian sock yarn series.  I can't figure out the rhyme or reason of this line of socks.  The Ottawa's are boldy striped, in colors no one in their right mind would put together.  Quebec_socks The Quebec colors are much more serene and muted, without a stripe in sight, completely different from her Ottawanian cousin.  Go figure.  I've got a couple more skeins from this Regia Canadian sock yarn line coming in the mail, so it will be interesting to see how they compare.  At any rate, I love the completed Ottawa ones.  They're so incredibly ugly, yet so comfy.  I just love them.    I even unloaded shared the remaining part of the skein with my friend, Nicole, since I was sending something her way, anyway.  I have no doubt that she'll find the hidden beauty in these bizarrely colored socks.  Anyway, I was wearing my Ottawa socks (a.k.a. the Overripe Bananas) yesterday and after a bit, I was admiring their funkiness, when I noticed something odd about the ribbing.  P1010116_1 See it?  Yeah, I knit a 1x1 ribbing on one sock and a 2x2 ribbing on the other sock.  When I discovered my mistake, I was laughing hysterically.  Poor homely sock.  It never had a chance.  Now, if I was a perfectionist or if these were intended as a gift, I'd rip the ribbing back on one sock, pick up stitches and make them match.  But since they're for me and they're not going to win any beauty pageants either way, I'm leaving them as is.  I really like these weird socks.  In fact, the Quebec socks may be a bit boring in comparison.  The colors are so muted, so pretty, so coordinated...yawn.  I knit on the Quebec sock during our kid's string concert last night.  He plays the viola.  Strings You might be able to pick him out next to the kid with the bass.  The concert was held in the local high school's gymnasium and we sat up high on wooden bleachers.  Each grade, from the fourth graders on up through the high school strings would play a few songs, with the complexity naturally growing with the higher grades.  Pirates seemed to be a running theme during this program, as several of the grades played music from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean".  It was surprisingly good.  I knit on through the pirate music until my hands got really sweaty and I had this overwhelming vision of me dropping one of my double pointed needles and having it fall loudly and embarrassingly through the bleacher gaps.

I was just thinking how much I liked the Quebec colour, perhaps you've been blinded by the bananas ;)

Check the pictures on the yarn labels. Some are stripers; some are .... not :-)

Personally, I love the colours in the Quebec, which I've also seen called Montreal.
